Celebrating the Power of Philanthropy: The 2024 PIA Celebration
On May 30th, the Fredericton Community Foundation hosted its annual Philanthropy in Action (PIA) Celebration, a significant initiative that recognizes and honours exceptional individuals who embody our community's true spirit of philanthropy. This year, we proudly celebrated the incredible contributions of Margaret and Bill Jones, whose five decades of volunteerism and support for various charitable causes have made a lasting impact on the greater Fredericton region.
Honouring Margaret and Bill Jones
Margaret and Bill Jones have dedicated countless hours to supporting numerous charitable initiatives, reflecting their unwavering commitment to the betterment of our community. Their generosity and kindness have touched many lives, and their contributions exemplify the essence of philanthropy in action. To honor their dedication, the Foundation awarded them the 2024 Philanthropy in Action Award, accompanied by a $10,000 grant for the charity of their choice. This year, Margaret and Bill chose Sistema NB, a local charity that inspires children to achieve their full potential through orchestral music education.
Supporting Sistema NB
Sistema NB's Fredericton Centre, one of nine centers across New Brunswick, received the $10,000 grant. This free after-school orchestral music program serves 1,200 children daily and has transformed their lives and trajectories since 2009. The funds will bolster Sistema NB's mission to nurture and inspire our community's next generation of musicians.
A Record-Breaking Night
This year's Philanthropy in Action event surpassed expectations, raising an impressive $120,000, breaking last year's record. These funds will enable the Fredericton Community Foundation to continue its vital work, supporting local organizations focused on food security, housing, economy, education, health, wellness, recreation, arts, culture, belonging, and the environment.
An Evening to Remember
Over 400 community members gathered at the Richard J. Currie Center to celebrate and support our collective philanthropic efforts. The evening featured a delightful array of food prepared by local chefs, complemented by the stunning spring views of Fredericton's lush greenery from the UNB Currie Center.
Our emcee, Marshall Button, entertained the audience with a heartfelt and humorous sketch about philanthropy, filling the room with laughter and thoughtful reflection on the importance of helping others. The excitement continued as raffle and auction winners were announced, adding to the evening's joy and celebration.
