Foundation steps up to support Ukrainians settling in Fredericton
Funding to kick-start a community campaign by the Multicultural Association of Fredericton
September 16th, 2022 – The Fredericton Community Foundation announced today that it has provided $15,895 to kick-start the fundraising campaign of the Multicultural Association of Fredericton (MCAF) in support of Ukrainian nationals and their families settling in the greater Fredericton region. The funds will be used to welcome Ukrainians to the community and support the non-funded costs they incur upon settlement. To date, 125 Ukranian nationals have arrived in Fredericton, with an additional 42 registered to arrive, adding to the ever-growing number of Ukrainians seeking a new home in Fredericton.
“We’re all about helping people help people, so we’ve decided to step up with funding to welcome Ukrainian newcomers to our community” said Calvin Milbury, Executive Director of the Fredericton Community Foundation. “We’re getting the ball rolling and know our community is eager to support Ukrainians looking to make a home here in the Fredericton region. MCAF is on the front line and has identified the immediate needs of newcomers.”
The dollars raised through the campaign efforts will go directly to Ukrainians to help offset the non-funded expenses of working and living in Canada. As the Ukrainians are not considered refugees, rather they are receiving a three-year temporary resident status through the Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel, those arriving in Canada cannot access any refugee funding provided by the government. MCAF is organizing a fundraising campaign within the community to provide newcomers with support during their time of need.
Dollars raised through the campaign will support items such as:
Welcome Baskets
Baby Supply Packages
Immigration Medical Exam Costs
Beds and Bedding
Bikes for Youth
Registration in Youth Activities
Children’s School Supplies
The Fredericton Community Foundation and MCAF together have created the Ukrainian Community Support Fund to collect public donations towards the campaign. Donations can be made online via www.fredfdn.ca/ukrainian-community-support.
This campaign will support Ukrainians who settle in the greater Fredericton region.
